I am also a pharmacist and public health specialist who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2017. You can read more about what motivated me to start this initiative and build this amazing community HERE. My current residence is in Washington DC and I serve as the Executive Resident of the American Pharmacists Association. I love marine life, enjoy outdoor activities, and savor food like no other. Every year I attempt to do three things: explore an aquarium, go on a great hike, and eat an amazing meal. Before then, I was born and raised in windswept highlands of Ethiopia, moved to the United States when I was 5. Ever since, I’ve bounced around the East Coast, making friends wherever I could. Always being on the move wasn’t easy, and I realized early on that no one goes through this life unscathed, and that one of the greatest things we can do for others is to reach out and hear their stories. This realization spurred me to take part in The MindReset, an organization I believe has the potential to affect countless lives. On the side, I like to read, write, do photography, and once in a blue moon, archery.

As a biology graduate, I have always loved and admired all things living and of the natural world. The mind at work is a powerful machine, but through pure happenstance, not all brains and bodies are created equal. In today’s society, whether these differences are genetic or physical afflictions the uniqueness of ourselves shouldn’t produce undue burden. The stigma around mental health and the importance on accepting all of our differences has gained some momentum, but I believe joining The MindReset will enable me to have a larger impact rather than keeping my opinions to myself. I found the MindReset through random chance after moving to Madison from Chicago, via wonderful people who wholeheartedly believe in the cause and their devotion ignited my interest in taking a role at their side.

I am a science nut who keeps reptiles as a hobby, paints and writes as creative and emotional outlets, and cycles avidly as a form of mental meditation and rebalancing. I take part in a triple-century charity ride every year that helps raise funds and awareness for the 13 million American kids that don’t know when their next meal will come called “Chef’s Cycle for No Kid Hungry.”

I believe physical activity can have a huge impact on someone’s mental wellbeing. While working in the fitness industry as a personal trainer, I’ve applied routine exercise and healthy lifestyle coaching to individuals with depression and individuals with autism spectrum disorder. My name is Jordan Haas and I suffered my traumatic brain injury from an overdose on heroin. I am very happy to be clean and sober now.i go to AA three times a week for support and inclusion. I am also a part of a live brain injury chat on Facebook called Hope After Head Injury. I grew up in the Philippines and travel constantly, South America is my next goal for where I want to travel to.

My name is Daniel Watson and I live in Madison Wisconsin. I am an HR Information Systems Specialist at a mid-sized HR firm. Graduated from UW-Platteville in 2016 with degrees in Computer Science and Business Administration. What drew me to TMR was my desire to be a part of a community that supports individuals that suffer from depression and anxiety of all levels. My family has always suffered from addiction and depression, and I am a product of it, but I won’t be defined by it. I manage a lot of my anxiety by lifting and running. Hello! My name is Joel Campnell. I’ve done a lot of different jobs, but most recently I was a copywriter.  I currently live with my wonderful partner in Lake Mills, WI and we have adjusted well to small-town life. I decided to join The MindReset because I believe in eliminating the stigma of mental illness, in making our communities kinder and more compassionate, and rooting ourselves in love.  As a person with anxiety, I use writing music as a way to express myself, reorient my perspective, and connect myself back to those around me. In my free time, I also enjoy craft beer, a bad-good pun, and reading.

One quote that has stuck with me comes from a college commencement speech David Foster Wallace about the purpose of education. In the speech, he recalls a joke about a fish who doesn’t know what water is, and uses it as a parable of mindfulness. I try to remember it every time I feel disconnected:

Hello there! My name is Julie. I’m a native Wisconsinite turned East Coaster with a passion for learning, human health and wellbeing. Writing has been a passion of mine since I was a child, filling up hundreds of notebooks with stories I made up and tiny details outlining those stories. I followed that passion to UW-Eau Claire, where I graduated with a degree in Communications & Journalism in May 2015. I’ve since worked at a variety of media publications in the Chippewa Valley before relocating to Madison on New Year’s Day 2019. Talk about resolutions. I’m currently 8 weeks away from graduating pharmacy school from Howard University. My name is Megan Flood, and I am thrilled to be part of TMR! I live in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, which is not too far away from my alma mater, UW-Madison. What I love most about my job as a speech-language pathologist is the ability to merge healthcare with the personal–every day, whether I’m working with older adults or preschoolers, we set goals together to break down the walls separating them from where they want to be. It is easy to get sucked into the fast-paced world around us, and easy to forget that healing takes time and patience. I joined The MindReset because it values community and the importance of human interaction for growth. Everyone is accepted, everyone supports one another. That’s how we start building what we need, whether it’s accessible mental healthcare, support groups, or a good old Midwestern potluck. Beautiful KatherineHello everyone!  My name is Katherine Ahn and I’m a 3rd-year pharmacy student at Howard University here in DC. I moved to the US when I was 9 and I lived in Dallas Texas until I moved to Austin for my undergrad in Biology.  Moving to DC was a big transition for me since I was leaving all my friends and family behind, and it was hard adjusting to the cold weather, traffic, and different atmosphere. It was not easy to be where I am today but I made it this far with a lot of support around me.  These support networks made me realize there is still hope when you think there isn’t and that there are people that care for you. I specialize in work surrounding victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and other trauma, as well as psychotherapy for sexual predators. I have always been extremely passionate about eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging conversation about taboo topics, like mental illness and sexuality. Therefore, I’m ecstatic to be a part of an organization that spreads awareness and promotes mental wellbeing through communication and support. I also find my happiness by exploring new restaurants, attending hockey games, traveling, and playing with dogs.

Taylor – SoMa Team

I am a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison completing my Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and criminal justice and I’ll be transitioning to law school next year. I believe in approaching individuals affected by the criminal legal system coming from points of mental health distress from a holistic and humanistic perspective. Nature and the education of philosophy and mindfulness can be huge tools and I hope to empower others with these and the help of The Mind Reset team. I can’t wait to see where we can go!

Trevor – SoMa Team 

Trevor LittleMy name is Trevor Little. I am from Madison, WI where I work at a fitness club as a trainer and membership counselor. I strongly believe exercise is important in one’s life, however, being mentally healthy is also very important to me. I feel as though mental health in today’s society is often unacknowledged. Within our community, we can all have an impact and show appreciation towards a cause that needs more attention. The question now is what will that impact be and how will it make a difference? The Mind Reset has given me a chance to find my voice and advocate towards a great cause. One quote that has me moving everyday is:

Dris – SoMa Team 

cropped-tmr-logo.pngHey there! My name is Drisneidi but everyone calls me Dris. I am originally from Dominican Republic but have been living in the US since I was 7. I am very passionate about health and prevention. Originally, I began studying medicine but then realized that I wanted to help via the public health field. I currently work in DC as a Health Fitness Program Manager and what drew me to the Mind Reset was the mission and similar goals we have for helping the community. I am also a fitness instructor and teach various formats but my favorite one is definitely Zumba. I love to exercise but have found that dancing and music are so therapeutic! My favorite quote since I was about 15 years old is…

I believe that with great power comes great responsibility and a lot of us hold back because we fear that we might mess up. At least for me, that is one of my biggest struggles!
